is anxiety really? How do panic attacks get started in the first place
and why is it so tough to overcome them?

It
all starts with the first one.
Can
you remember your first panic attack?
Of
course! As

know what a silly question that is. How
could you forget, right?
There’s
many reasons why you may have had that first attack.
Maybe
you were under extreme pressure at work or home. Maybe
you were starting a new life event like college, moving, getting
married, or having children.

you have a genetic
predisposition to have anxiety.
Do
other people in
your family have similar issues?
It
could be ANY of these things, or even a few of them together.
But
you know what?
It
doesn’t matter.

right. I don’t care what caused it. And
neither should you.
We
can’t go back and change it. You had an anxiety attack.
It’s done. Over. Regardless of why.
But
now, no matter what was making you anxious at the time of your
first attack, you’re afraid of having ANOTHER terrible
experience
like that one!
So
since we can’t roll back the hands of time and change you
BEFORE your first panic attack, let’s focus on what we can do

To
be honest with you, it really doesn’t matter what caused your
first attack, even if we knew it wouldn’t help, because as
you'll
see, the solution is the same.
But
let’s not get ahead of
ourselves….
So
you had your first attack, for
whatever reason, and from that single experience you developed an
anxiety response that you carry with you to this day.
It
didn’t take long for your mind to learn something very
powerful did it?
Remember
that,
it’s important. We’re going to use it to
help you
conquer your anxiety.
What
would your life be like if
you didn’t struggle
with anxiety or panic?

would you do if
you KNEW you could handle it?
- How
would it be to stop the
scary, anxious, thoughts that run through your head all day and finally

From
that first attack, you’ve
learned to interpret your feelings of anxiety (sometimes even very
minor anxiety or stress that everyone feels) as a threat.
When
you feel you’re threatened,
it activates your body's “fight or flight”
response, which
is nature’s way of protecting you. Within
fractions of a second, hormones pump through your body and prepare you
to fight off a vicious predator, or run away as fast as you
can…to fight or flee.
This
is all great stuff if
you’re actually under attack or in danger.
If
you see a vicious dog running at
you from the corner of your eye, you WANT your heart already pumping so
you can run away fast.
You
want adrenaline flowing through your body so you can fight it off
if necessary.
You
want your hearing to be
heightened, and your vision hyper focused, so you pay attention to your
threat.
But
when you’re getting a
haircut, or in line at the grocery store, or in traffic, and
there’s no REAL threat, you don’t want or need any
of that!
In
fact, all it does is scare you and
make you uncomfortable. Your heart pounds
for seemingly no reason. You feel like
you’re losing control of your body as the hormones surge
through
your muscle. Your vision gets
blurry and
your palms sweat, thoughts race out of control through your
head…
But
you’re making a huge
mistake!
It
isn’t your fault…
you just didn’t
know the WHOLE truth…
You
probably already know on a logical
level that you’re not in any real danger from your anxiety.
But
I also know how little that means
when you’re actually going through an anxiety attack.
See,
your response is an instinctual
one, as we’ve talked about. You’re
not reacting on a rational, logical level, like you do when someone
asks you if you want some iced tea. You
don’t analyze the situation, calmly thinking things like,
“Am I thirsty? Do I want tea or soda? Maybe a lemon
wedge…”
You
don’t really THINK at all,
at least not in the way you normally do. You
just REACT based on thousands of years of evolution.
It’s
not your fault,
you’re not doing anything wrong, and you’re not
weak, sick,
or strange.
You’re
not having a logical
reaction, it’s a reaction that’s occurring on a
deeper
level, one much more difficult to control and influence.
What
you need to do is to learn how to
gain control over your reaction on that other level.
All
the logical thought in the world
won’t make much of a difference until you change the root of
the
problem.
Trying
to talk yourself out of a panic
attack is like trying to get the milk back in the glass once
you’ve spilled it, it’s too late!
Don’t
take my word for it, think
about it. Haven’t
you already been
telling yourself to just relax and calm down? Haven’t
you tried to make the feelings that come out of nowhere go away? Don’t
you try and hold yourself together? Haven’t
you heard to
“accept” it before?
How’s
that worked out for you?
It
doesn’t work because
you’re trying to teach the wrong part of your mind.
You
wouldn’t try and teach a dog
to fetch a stick by sitting it down and explaining it to him would you?
The
dog doesn’t think like that. Dogs
don’t think logically.
It’s
just as useless to try and overcome your anxiety using logic.
It
just won’t listen.
I’ve
got some even worse
news…
What
you need to do is the exact
OPPOSITE of what
you’re probably doing now…you’re
actually making
your anxiety WORSE!
Whenever
you get anxious or even THINK
about a situation that bothers you, your mind remembers your past
anxiety attacks and how you responded. It
doesn’t have to try very hard to remember and get in touch
with
those feelings because the reaction was so strong it left quite an
impression in your memory. Remember how easy it was to recall your
first attack and how vivid it is?
It
makes the wrong connection between
ANY anxiety and that extreme reaction you had. It assumes that there
must be a threat and it needs to protect you using the fight or flight
reaction we talked about.
Every
time you get anxious and have
that same reaction, or avoid the situation to escape the anxiety, you
tell your mind that it’s RIGHT to consider it a dangerous
threat
that needs to be avoided.
You’re
actually teaching
yourself to be afraid!
The
more you teach it, the better it
gets at it and the easier it is. Before
long,
you can go from calm to panic attack in no time at all,
you’ve
taught yourself to utilize your fight or flight reaction well!
But
that’s not something you wanted to get good at, is it?
See,
it’s just like how you
learned to do anything, think back to learning to ride a bike.
When
you first started, you had to
really pay attention to balancing, steering, and all the other
subtle adjustments that you need to make to stay upright. You
zig
zagged down the sidewalk awkwardly as your mind learned and stored
everything you did for future use.
Rather
quickly, you don’t need
to try as hard to ride. Your mind had all your past experiences stored
up and it could look back and see what happened last time you made a
correction or moved the wheel a certain way. You
don’t use conscious, logical thought anymore to ride your
bike
like you used to. You don’t even THINK about it at all, your
mind
just DOES it.
Your
anxiety is the same way. Practice
it like you have been, and very quickly, your mind learns how to react
by what you teach it and pretty soon you don’t even think
about
it anymore. Your mind KNOWS how to react, so it doesn’t
bother
you with questions, it just does it. You don’t even get a
choice
anymore.
Understand
why traditional learning
won’t affect your anxiety once you’ve got it?
You
need to teach it to react
differently.
The
good news is that if you can teach your mind to react poorly and
with anxiety, you can just as quickly teach it to react with calm and
peace.
You
just need to learn how to.
You
can turn back the clock to
how you were BEFORE
you had anxiety problems…
I
promised that we’d get back to
my story….
I
used to be just like you.
My
life was filled with constant
anxiety, panic
attacks, and I wondered if I’d ever be
‘normal’ again.
I
was terrified the answer was no.
I
missed out on life, let it pass me
by, because I was just too afraid of my anxiety. I
avoided it at all costs.
I
took medications, and they helped
some, but as soon as I stopped them, the anxiety came right back. It
didn’t seem like a solution, just

saw therapists, sometimes for years. They
were nice enough people and I'm sure meant
well, but when it was all said and done, I did a lot of talking about
my childhood and nothing in my day to day life was any different.
The
anxiety and panic was still there,

I
read all the books I could on
anxiety and panic, and I’ll be honest, I learned a lot and
some
of it was helpful. But what I read helped me to cope with the anxiety. I

I
wanted ME back.

Eventually,
I started to understand
